The Green Way To Deal With Moss And Lichen

A number of local power washing companies prefer to use strong chemicals to remove moss and lichen from driveways, steps and the like. In the past, when it was more widely available, chlorine bleach was a very popular solution for removing moss and lichen. Even today, some companies are still pushing the benefits of various chemicals that kill these living organisms (moss is technically a plant; lichen is a combination of algae and fungi).

At Anyclean, we say no to using strong chemicals such as chlorine bleach to clean driveways, even if it does kill moss and lichen. These chemicals can often damage the finish of patios and the like, especially those made from wood or brick. Then there’s the issue of what happens when the chemicals go beyond the pathway itself. It’s got to go somewhere, and if that somewhere is the stormwater drain or your garden, it will go on killing plants, fungi and algae… which is not a responsible thing to do for the environment. It’s also downright hazardous for our workers to handle and spray around the place – and we train our cleaning professionals to a very high standard, so we want to keep them safe and healthy as well as keeping all of our customers happy.

It is possible to clean away moss, algae and lichen with more environmentally friendly substances such as vinegar or borax – but even then, this won’t actually remove the moss and the like; it will just kill it.

Because we take sustainability seriously in our power washing business, we use high-pressure washing systems for cleaning driveways, patios, pathways and the like. A powerful jet of ordinary water will blast away stubborn moss and lichen – and it will also remove all the other kinds of dirt and grime on your pathway or steps such as mud, dead leaves and other debris (yes, including dog dirt!). This other dirt is something that chemical methods of cleaning pathways just don’t deal with.

Using high-pressure hoses also means that we can clean more than just pathways and patios. After all, other surfaces suffer from lichen growth.
